Course at a glance

This programme enables learners to complete a year studying a variety of animal related modules such as Health and Husbandry, Animal Biology, Animal Handling whilst re-sitting GCSE English or Maths. On successful completion, students may progress to either T-level Behaviour and Welfare or Animal Science*

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs

at grade 4 (old GCSE grade C) or above, to include 2 from English, Maths or Science with at least a grade 3 (old GCSE grade D) in the remaining subject. This course would be offered whereby the applicant has a grade 3 in either English or Maths from the aforementioned and will need to continue to study and re-sit that subject.

There are lectures, talks from guest speakers, visits, and practical sessions in the Wildlife Park. Students’ work is assessed continually throughout the course through the submission of assignments and exams. In each year, a final end-of-year exam and assessment are also carried out.

 

 

 

Core and specialist modules to be delivered:

Course themes include how to care for, handle and manage a variety of animals, understanding animal health and how the animal body works. Students will also cover nutritional and accommodation requirements, behaviour and communication, exotic care and welfare. There are lectures, talks from guest speakers, visits, practical sessions in the college’s Wildlife park and work-related experience. Students’ work is assessed continually throughout the course through formative assessment, assignment-based modules and summative exams.

The units you will study as part of the Level 3 Practical Animal Care Skills course are:

  • Promote and maintain the health and well-being of animals
  • Plan the handling and restraint of animals
  • Plan diets and feeding regimes for animals
  • Monitor and evaluate the feeding of animals
  • Provide advice and guidance on the choice and care of animals to prospective keepers
  • Provide information on how to maintain the behaviour, health and welfare of animals
  • Recognise and interpret the behaviour of animals

4 GCSEs at grade 4 (old GCSE grade C) or above, to include 2 from English, Maths or Science with at least a grade 3 (old GCSE grade D) in the remaining subject. This course would be offered whereby the applicant has a grade 3 in either English or Maths from the aforementioned and will need to continue to study and re-sit that subject.

*A grade 5 or above in Science would be needed to progress to the T Level Animal Care and Management – Science Pathway.

Alternatively, a suitable Level 2 vocational qualification (Merit or above) with English, Maths and Science at Level 2.

Progression routes include progression to T-Level (upon successfully gaining grade 4 in the GCSE re-sit subject).

Progression and Development Sessions

All students enrolled on a Level 2 or Level 3 course will be required to attend Progression and Development sessions every week. These sessions will cover a wide range of topics from careers and employability, British Values and equality and diversity to essential life skills such as mental health and wellbeing, drugs and alcohol and personal safety.

Students are to undertake one day per week and one block week (if applicable) for work experience, students are encouraged to find their own work experience in a role that they are interested in. The work experience co-ordinators are on hand to help you with finding a work placement.

 

 

Students are to complete a minimum of 150 hours in their first year and 315 hours in their second year of study. (Some students may opt to complete the 315 hours in their first year, this will be discussed during induction)

Students are expected to buy PPE, consisting of overalls and steel toe capped boots for practical sessions. A normal range of stationary is required for theory sessions.

 

Trip costs are kept to a minimum wherever possible, trip information will be provided at the start of the course.
