Support for Looked After ChildrenΒ
NSPCC helpline
There has been a lot of news in the press recently about students who are reporting that they have suffered some form of sexual abuse both in and outside school /college. The Department for Education has commissioned the NSPCC to establish a dedicated independent helpline for people who have experienced abuse in education. The Report Abuse in Education helpline comes after a high number of anonymous testimonials were submitted to the Everyoneβs Invited website, documenting abuse in all types of schools, colleges, and universities.
The helpline will provide both children and adults who have experienced sexual abuse in schools with support and advice, including onward action such as contacting the police if they wish to. The helpline will also provide support to parents and professionals. Anyone who gets in touch through this dedicated helpline will also be signposted to other relevant support services available, including Childline, which provides ongoing support and counselling to children and young people.
We also have an internal reporting form called the Whisper Form. This allows students to report any type of sexual abuse/harassment or something that has made them uncomfortable. Students can report anonymously if they wish or they can tell us their name if they want to take things further or if they need support. As a College, we have pledged that we will do everything we can to resolve the issue and use the reports we receive to promote a culture which is fair, safe and free from any type of harassment.
The dedicated and confidential NSPCC helpline β Report Abuse in Education can be reached on 0800 136 663 or by email at help@nspcc.org.uk. Alternatively if you would like to talk to someone in college please either call our Safeguarding lines :
York / Wakefield / Saltaire/ Middlesbrough – 07773 312617
or speak to Student Services or request to speak with one of our Student Wellbeing Co-ordinators.
