This course combines practical based skills gained during the apprenticeship and/or employment with academic theory from taught sessions at College. Askham Bryan College does not run an unpaid route for students who are working as volunteers. Students must have secured employment within a veterinary practice or have been offered an apprenticeship position by a training practice.

Key Information
Askham Bryan College is an approved centre for vocational training for veterinary nursing.
There is a range of internal and external assessments including assignments, examinations and the RCVS associated Day One Skills List. To meet the professional regulatory requirements, all students must complete a minimum of 1800 hours in an approved training practice. Upon successful completion of all assessment elements, students are entitled to apply to join the RCVS Register of Veterinary Nurses and use the post nominal title description of RVN.

Unit VN05 – Practical Veterinary Nursing Skills and Professional Behaviours
Unit VN06 – Anaesthesia and Theatre Nursing Skills
Unit VN07 – Life Stage and Medical Nursing Care and Support
Unit VN08 – Principles of Veterinary Nursing Care 2
Unit VN09 – Surgical Nursing and Patient Care
The course is structured to allow students to spend two days per week working on college work and three days per week in an approved veterinary training practice applying what they have learnt. The course runs for three years (third year within industry). Apprenticeship students will typically enter the gate way for end-point assessment within at 30-36 months.

Year 2 – One day at college, and one day working remotely on college assigned and teaching sessions (home-based).
Year 3 – Assigned to the completion of outstanding assessments, Nursing Progress Log and Mandatory Training Hours.

Askham Bryan College is dedicated to animal nursing and veterinary nursing student education. The veterinary nursing department at York has a well-equipped, mock veterinary practice on site, allowing students to develop practical skills.
Students are mentored through the range day one skills to prepare them for the end point assessment (OSCE examinations)
The typically duration for this apprenticeship is 30-36 months.
Years 1 and 2 will be attended teaching delivery with the final 6 to 12 months of study working through end point assessment.

Students will be required to demonstrate their fitness to practise including the disclosure of any criminal convictions that may affect registration with the RCVS as qualified veterinary nurses.
Employers pay for apprenticeship training, where fees are applicable. This will be discussed with your employer prior to the apprenticeship set-up process.
The fees charged for the apprenticeship include:
- Awarding body registration costs
- All on-programme teaching
- Assessment and support delivered by the college
- Support material
- Access to college facilities such as the Learning Resource Centre
- Student Moodle
- Wider college student support services where required
Employers must pay apprentices at least the minimum rate set out by current National Minimum Wage Legislation. This includes payment for all off-job learning and any associated costs such as travel and accommodation.

Students who have successfully completed this qualification will enter the register of veterinary nurses, entitling them to practise as a registered veterinary nurse (RVN).
Those wishing to further their education may progress onto specialist qualifications.

Employer involvement
Your employer must enable you to spend a minimum of 20% of your usual work hours undertaking off-job learning. This is defined as learning which is undertaken outside of the normal day-to-day working environment and leads towards the achievement of the apprenticeship. This can include training that is delivered at your normal place of work but must not be delivered as part of your normal working duties, and must be directly relevant to the apprenticeship standard.
Off-job learning could include the following:
- Teaching of theory such as lectures, role playing, simulation exercises, online learning or manufacturer training
- Practical training such as shadowing experienced staff or mentoring, industry visits and attendance at competitions
- Study support and time spent writing assessments/assignments
Your employer must commit to supporting you in the workplace, participating in progress review meetings, providing use of ICT facilities so you can access your e-portfolio and agreeing/ensuring your readiness for the End Point Assessment. They may be required to provide further supporting evidence/endorsements about your performance, which form part of the End Point Assessment.
