On this course students will learn about animal care and develop the practical skills needed to care for and handle a variety of animals from our collection. The course offers an opportunity to work with a diverse range of species, with theory and practical modules throughout the year.
Entry Requirements
4 GCSEs
at grade 3 (old GCSE grade D) or above to include two from English, Maths and Science, with at least a grade 2 (old GCSE grade E) in the remaining subject. Alternatively a suitable Level 1 vocational qualification with English and Maths at Level 1.

Key Information
Students will learn how to plan and monitor animal feeding as well as learn how to maintain animal health, welfare and accommodation. The course themes include planning and monitoring animal feeding, maintaining animal health, biology, welfare and accommodation, animal handling and grooming.
There are lectures, talks from guest speakers, visits, practical sessions in the Animal Unit and work related experience. Students’ work is assessed continually throughout the course, with end of year assessments and exams.
At York, students will study this course in our Animal Management Facility and Wildlife Conservation Park. These facilities home a range of animals including reptiles, amphibians, exotic and domestic mammals, birds, fish and invertebrates.
Students studying at our Wakefield centre will spend part of their time at York and part at Wakefield. Students will study this course in our Animal Management Facility and Wildlife Conservation Park based at York and at Bull Ring House in Wakefield.
Students studying at our Saltaire will have the opportunity to use the Animal Management facilities at Askham Bryan College, York as well as working at offsite local facilities in partnership with the College.
Students studying at Middlesbrough have dedicated animal units that have a wide array of species that students will work alongside to further their knowledge and experience.

Upon successful completion of this course students may progress on to a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management. There are several career paths to take upon successful completion of study or further study at degree level
Progression and Development Sessions:
All students enrolled on a Level 2 or Level 3 course will be required to attend Progression and Development sessions every week. These sessions will cover a wide range of topics from careers and employability, British Values and equality and diversity to essential life skills such as mental health and wellbeing, drugs and alcohol and personal safety.
Students are to undertake one day per week and one block week (if applicable) for work experience, students are encouraged to find their own work experience in a role that they are interested in. The work experience co-ordinators are on hand to help you with finding a work placement.
Students are to complete a minimum of 150 hours.
Students are expected to buy PPE, consisting of overalls and steel toe capped boots for practical sessions. A normal range of stationary is required for theory sessions.
Trip costs are kept to a minimum wherever possible, trip information will be provided at the start of the course.
