Course at a glance
This course gives a general introduction to horticulture, which is suitable for anyone wanting to prepare for more advanced study or a career in horticulture, with a combination of practical and theoretical elements. It is taught one day per week, either Tuesday or Wednesday 10.00 - 4.00pm over the year.

This course is delivered at our York Campus as follows: (please note that we provide the option of attendance on either Tuesday or Wednesday)

This course will commence in the week beginning 23rd September 2024 and complete in the week beginning 16th June 2025. The course follows the term and holiday dates determined by North Yorkshire Council.
The RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture
This highly respected and widely recognised qualification is ideal for professional gardeners and horticulturists seeking to gain formal qualifications, as well as for those looking to move into the horticulture industry and passionate amateur gardeners seeking to expand their knowledge. The RHS Level 2 Certificate is designed to embed current horticultural best practice, whilst embracing core principles of sustainability. The full RHS Level 2 Certificate consist of two separate qualifications, as outlined below:
- RHS Level 2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture
- RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth and Development

Key Information
This qualification is delivered via a combination of classroom-based learning and practical tasks. It covers a wide range of horticultural skills including:
- Plant Identification
- Plant Establishment
- Plant Propagation
- Plant Care
- Plant Pruning
- Garden Features
- Grassed Areas
Please note that for practical courses, learners are required to provide steel toe-capped safety boots, suitable gloves and clothing appropriate to the weather conditions.
Assessment consists of:
- Online Competence Assessment (OCA)
- Practical Competence Assessment (PCA)

Some horticultural experience, preferably completion of RHS Level 1, or a suitable Level 1 vocational qualification with English and Maths at Level 1.
Applicants are normally expected to have a level 2 already in English and Maths.
Upon successful completion of this course students may progress to a Level 3 course which builds upon their skills, or into the horticultural and landscape industries at a trainee or apprentice level.
If you continue to higher study, you could join similar businesses in a more senior role, or move towards garden design, business management, or study towards a technical scientific role in the businesses that support horticulture.
