This is why we provide a range of options to suit different needs and budgets. We ensure that living in Halls is an integral part of your campus experience.

Living at our York Campus puts you right at the heart of college life. We offer a range of accommodation. This includes rooms with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities, en-suite rooms with a shared snack kitchen or self-catering rooms with shared bathroom facilities.

Residential accommodation is available at our York campus. Please note that we do not offer accommodation at any of our other centres.

How to apply

You will need your student ID number to apply. If you do not have this please check any previous correspondence the college as sent to you or you can email Accommodation@askham-bryan.ac.uk

Applications are done through an online booking system. All communications will be by email so please make sure you use the students’ email and check regularly once you have applied.

At the point of applying for accommodation, you must pay a refundable deposit of £300 in addition to the accommodation fee. The College shall hold the deposit as security against dilapidations, breakages and unpaid fees for which the student is liable under their accommodation agreement.

This fee is converted into the deposit which is used to pay for any damages, unpaid fees or losses incurred by Askham Bryan College during the occupation of the room. Students who are returning into accommodation and have already paid a bond can have this carried over to the next year.

Once you have made an application, the accommodation team will assess it to make sure you are eligible for accommodation. If you are eligible, you will be contacted with the offer of a room during the summer which you need to accept if you wish to take up residency at the college. You will then be sent a license agreement to sign and return to College. If you are under 18, your parent / guardian and guarantor will also need to sign the accommodation agreement. We cannot guarantee a specific room or room type but we will try to accommodate any preferences wherever possible.

Your full accommodation fee will be split into ten equal instalments; the first instalment will be due on or before 16th August 2024, keys will not be released unless this payment has been made by 16th August 2024. The remaining nine instalments can then be paid by recurring card payment from September to May.

If we have insufficient accommodation we will give priority to students who live the furthest away from College as per our residential policy. Any student who is unsuccessful in obtaining a room at this stage will be placed on a waiting list.

Accommodation is offered for the academic year only and is subject to the terms and conditions of occupation which must be signed prior to the student moving into the room. Students in College accommodation are expected to abide by these rules and parents of students aged under 18 are also asked to read the College Residential Agreement and confirm they also understand the rules.

Please be aware that accommodation for both FE and HE students is for term time only. Higher Education students will not have access to their rooms outside published College term dates so during Christmas and Summer holidays they will be asked to clear their rooms completely.

 

 

Moving in

We will contact you in August with full details about moving in and your moving in date will depend on your circumstances. It will normally be the Sunday prior to the start of your course.

When you arrive to collect your keys you will also enrol onto your academic course. You will be sent further information from the Student Records Team in relation to what you need to bring with you.

Under 18 accommodation

At Askham Bryan College we strive to ensure we can meet the requirements of students wishing to study with us and live in residential accommodation; with this in mind please contact the accommodation team in confidence if you have concerns about any medical, cultural or religious factors that may be concerning you.

There are a number of options available for students under the age of 18 studying a further education course with us. Please note that all of our under 18 FE students will live in single sex accommodation separate to our over 18 students.

En Suite Halls

Arkendale and Bishopdale: Single rooms with en suite bathrooms, offered on a catered basis.

Each block contains 63 single study bedrooms with en suite facilities. There are three rooms on the ground floor of each block specifically designed for students with disabilities; we ask that you identify any support you may need on your application. There is a snack kitchen on each floor which has kettles, toasters, a fridge, a freezer and a microwave and a table and chairs. There is also a communal lounge on each floor with TV and sofas, an excellent place to relax and chat to friends. These rooms are offered on a catered basis only.

Standard Halls with Shared Facilities

Jervaulx (Under 18 Female): Twinned rooms offered as a single occupancy with shared bathrooms, offered on a catered basis.

Each block contains 16 study bedrooms with shared bathroom facilities including showers, toilets and wash hand basins. There is a snack kitchen in each block which contains a fridge, freezer, kettle, toaster and microwave; there are also tables and chairs to eat at and sofas and a TV. These rooms are offered on a catered basis only.

Main Building: (Under 18 Male) Single rooms with shared bathrooms:
35 single study bedrooms on the 1st floor of the Main building. All these rooms have shared bathroom and kitchen facilities. The kitchens include a fridge, freezer, kettle, toaster and microwave. These rooms are offered on a catered basis only.

Catering

At Askham Bryan College we have a central refectory called the Campus Kitchen and Coffee Yard which are open for the use of staff and students daily. The food is prepared on the premises and we provide a full range of breakfasts, cakes, snacks, hot drinks, lunches, salad bar, healthy options and evening meals. Vegetarian options are always available and we cater for special diets, please just make us aware.

Students who are living in College accommodation on a catered basis will have a combined ID and food card that will automatically be loaded with their allowance of either £40 or £47 or £52.50 per week depending on which food package has been chosen.

This can be used by the student to purchase their food on campus from the Campus Kitchen or Coffee Yard and at other food outlets on site. You can also top up the allowance on the card online, please see here for further details.

We encourage students to monitor the balance on their food cards and budget appropriately to avoid accruing large credits as any balance remaining on the food card at the end of the year will not be refunded.

By signing the accommodation agreement the student or parent / guardian/ guarantor undertakes to pay the published charges for accommodation, it is therefore important to read the terms and conditions of the agreement before signing it.

Can I have self-catered accommodation if I’m under 18?

If you are under 18 you will only be offered accommodation on a catered basis.

Are there staff on site in the evenings and at weekends?

Yes, there will be residential staff on the premises to ensure the welfare and safety of resident students and the security of the premises.

 

 

I will be 17 when I start college, who will I be accommodated with?

Students aged 16 or 17 on the 31 August of the year they start college will be housed separately to those 18+.

Do I have to go home at the weekend?

Under 18 Students MUST return home each weekend unless course commitments (Equine yard or Farm Duties) or other exceptional circumstances require you to be on site. Any request to stay on site at a weekend must be made with the Residential Services Manager at least 5 days in advance. Over 18 students are able to stay on site.

Who takes priority for room bookings?
Accommodation is allocated on a first come, first served basis, however if accommodation becomes full, priority will be given to students who live furthest away. Priority will also be given to under 18 FE students and 1st year over 18 FE & HE students.

Fees – Further Education Students

Prices shown are indicative and may be subject to change.

Catered accommodation is available with a choice of three weekly food packages, Option A and Option B and Options C.

  • Option A provides a food allowance of £40 per week
  • Option B provides a food allowance of £47 per week
  • Option C provides a food allowance of £52.50 per week

The amount will automatically load onto your combined ID and food card every week but please be aware that any money not spent at the end of the year is non-refundable so please make sure you spend it throughout the year.

Each block contains 10 single study bedrooms with a wash hand basin in each room and shared bathroom facilities including showers, toilets and wash hand basins on the ground floor; there is also a separate toilet on the first floor. There is a snack kitchen which includes a fridge, kettle, toaster and microwave and a table and chairs.

Main Building: Single rooms with shared bathrooms, Self-catering.

20 single study bedrooms on the 2nd floor of the main building. All these rooms have shared bathroom and kitchen facilities. The kitchens include a fridge, freezer, kettle, toaster, microwave and cooker.

Please note if you are a Degree student, the 1st payment will need to be made before your 1st loan payment comes through.

FAQs

  • Can I apply for accommodation?

    I live two hours away from College

    Askham Bryan College provides residential accommodation for students attending the York campus. The accommodation is intended to ease the travel burden on students whose home address is beyond a reasonable daily commute from the College. By this, we mean that your home address is usually at least one hour away from College by public or College transport.

     

    I want to live in accommodation but can’t afford to pay the fees

    The College seeks to make accommodation available to a broad range of students and financial support may be available through means-tested bursaries and various scholarships. Information on financial assistance is available on the College website or through Student Services.

  • Booking of accommodation

    When can I apply for accommodation?

    A provisional booking for accommodation may be made once you have received a conditional offer of a place on a course of study at College.

    How do I apply?

    You can apply via the College website from the Spring of the year of your application. After application a security deposit of £300 must be paid.

    Do I need to pay anything else?

    Your full accommodation fee will be split into ten equal instalments; the first instalment will be due on or before 16th August 2024, keys will not be released unless this payment has been made by 16th August 2024.   • What happens to the deposit?

    We ask that students pay a refundable Security Deposit of £300 in addition to the accommodation fee. If you choose not to move into accommodation this bond is fully refundable. The College shall hold the security deposit as security against dilapidations, breakages and unpaid fees for which the student is liable under their accommodation agreement. For the avoidance of doubt, the Security Deposit is not a Holding Deposit as defined by section 3, Schedule 1 of the Tenant Fees Act 2019. If there are no unpaid fees the full amount will be refunded to you at the end of your time in accommodation.

    What happens if I don’t pay the bond and pre-payment?

    Payment of the security deposit and the first instalment must be made in full before you can be given access to a room.

  • When can I use my room?

    Further Education Students:
    Room bookings are for term time only, your contract does not cover half term & holiday periods. The accommodation contract clearly states that you will not have access to your room during holiday periods and will need to empty your room over half term periods as directed in your accommodation handbook.

    Higher Education Students:
    Higher Education students are able to stay in their room over the half term breaks as their contract covers these weeks. The only time as a Higher education you will be asked to leave your accommodation will be over the Christmas break. You do not need to remove your belongings.

    What happens if I need to be in College during the holidays?

    In exceptional circumstances, at the College’s discretion, it may be possible for the College to offer accommodation to you during a vacation. Any such circumstances must be discussed with and agreed by the Head of Accommodation and Residential Support Manager in advance and payment for the accommodation must be made in full in advance of that vacation.

    Can I request a specific room?

    The College is unable to accept requests for specific rooms. You can express a preference for a type of room and we will endeavour to meet your preference but rooms will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

  • Who takes priority for room bookings?

    Accommodation is allocated on a first come, first served basis, however if accommodation becomes full, priority will be given to students whose home address is most distant from the College.

  • The offer of accommodation

    If I have a room in the first year does this mean I am guaranteed one for every year I am at College?

    No student can be guaranteed accommodation for the duration of their course. You must re-apply for accommodation every year but providing your bond has not been used to pay any unpaid fees, it can be transferred from one year to the next.

    I have applied for a course, why do I need to apply again for accommodation?

    The process of application for accommodation is separate from the application for a course; therefore an offer of a place on a course does not guarantee a place in accommodation. You need to apply separately for accommodation.

    What happens if I break the rules at College?

    Accommodation or the offer of accommodation may be withdrawn with immediate effect should you fail to comply with the student code of conduct and / or residential rules.

    Can I stay in accommodation after my course has finished?

    No, accommodation is only available to students enrolled on a course at the College.

  • Can anyone stay in accommodation?

    No, residence in College accommodation is conditional on you meeting certain criteria.

    • If you are under 18 on 18 August 2024 you must provide details of a responsible adult (normally your parent or guardian) who is contactable at all times when you are resident at the College. This adult must agree to be available at all times to remove (within four hours) you from site should you be ill, be found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol or be in breach of any elements of the student code of conduct or residential rules. This adult agrees to be contacted at any time and you give authority for the College to contact this adult.
    • You will not be offered accommodation if you are considered to pose a risk to the College community.
    • You will not be offered accommodation if you have been previously excluded from any educational institution for behavioural or criminal reasons OR been placed in specialist behaviour management units (e.g. a Pupil Referral Unit) within the last three years.
    • You must have the ability to live independently including the ability to self-manage and the capability to comply with the student code of conduct and residential rules.
    • If you are a returning student and have a history of poor behaviour at College resulting in a stage 3 or stage 4 disciplinary during the last three years, your application will be referred to the Admissions Panel and you are unlikely to be granted accommodation. If permitted accommodation you will be placed on a behaviour contract.
    • You must be able to demonstrate an ability to fund your accommodation.
    • You must complete an online application and pay the required deposit and pre-payment.
    • You must have no outstanding debts with the College.
    • There must be acceptable arrangements for the payment for accommodation in place with the College Finance Department prior to the start of the academic year.
    • You are required to complete a medical declaration before moving into accommodation and to disclose any information of a sensitive nature. The College will request that you vacate accommodation if the declaration is incorrect or if your safety or that of others may be at risk.

    If you have a criminal record you may be refused accommodation:

    • If you have minor offences you may be permitted accommodation at the College but in all cases a student with a criminal record will be referred to the Admissions Panel.
    • If you have previously been convicted of any unspent criminal offence leading to a custodial sentence you will be strictly prohibited from accommodation.
    • If you have an unspent offence relating to any of the following you will not be permitted accommodation at the college: Physical violence, stalking / harassment, offences leading to being placed on the sex offenders register, and supply or conspiracy to supply or trafficking of drugs.

     

  • Overview of the rules of residential accommodation

    What happens if I can’t pay for my accommodation?

    If you are struggling to pay then speak to Student Support Services and Finance as soon as possible.

    What happens if I stop paying for my accommodation?

    If you default on payments or fail to comply with any arrangements made for paying your accommodation fees, we may bar access to your accommodation until either payment is received in full, or an acceptable alternative payment schedule is agreed with the Finance department.

    What happens if I damage College property?

    Any damage caused will be charged to the individual responsible, or group of individuals in the case of communal areas. The College can use the security deposit you have paid to cover any unpaid debts that exist at the end of the academic year.

    What if I want to move room?

    If you wish to move room you must first discuss this with the Head of Accommodation who will consult with the Residential Support Manager and a decision will be made at their discretion. If the new room costs more, a revised invoice will be raised and the extra amount of money due will be requested to be added to any existing payment agreement. If the new room costs less, a credit for the difference will be paid back to you.

    Who can come in my room?

    Accommodation staff may enter your room to carry out inspections for damage, repairs and general cleanliness. Student Services staff responsible for residential accommodation may enter your room if they have reasonable cause for concern. Student Services staff responsible for residential accommodation and any other staff are, with the express permission of the Principal, permitted to carry out a search of your room if they have reasonable suspicion that stolen property, illegal substances or materials are being stored or consumed contrary to the law or College procedures.

    Other designated College staff are permitted to undertake routine checks of students’ rooms for the purpose of monitoring damage and any necessary repairs as well as general hygiene.

    Cleaners will enter your room on a daily basis to empty your bin and once a week to clean your room.

    Can I have visitors stay in my room?

    You MUST seek permission from the Residential Support Manager before anyone visits your room.

  • Catering

    If my contract is for catered accommodation and I don’t spend all the money I have been allocated can I claim it back?

    If you have signed a contract which includes catering and you do not use the full allowance allocated to you, no refund will be paid back for meals you do not take.

    I have chosen to live in a self-catered room, can I still use the Dining Room?

    Yes, of course you can.

    What catering is provided?

    The College will provide such catering provision as required to meet the minimum standards required by the Social Care Common Inspection Framework. During term time breakfast, lunch and dinner is served Monday to Friday and Brunch at the weekends. Opening times are advertised on site.

  • Cleaning

    Under 18 accommodation – All accommodation is cleaned once a week and the bins are emptied daily. The communal areas, including stairs, kitchens and bathrooms, are cleaned daily. Cleaners will only clean rooms if they can do so safely and easily, the student needs to make sure their room is tidy!

    Over 18 Accommodation – It is the responsibility of the student to keep their own room clean and tidy throughout the term. The communal areas, including stairs, kitchens and bathrooms, will be cleaned cleaned daily by the cleaning team.

    Loo roll is provided in all bathrooms including the en-suites. Students are responsible for their own washing up and cleaners will not clean a room if it is too untidy to do so. There are laundry facilities on site which all students have access to.

  • What about car parking?

    Those students bringing cars, motorbikes or mopeds on campus may do so free of charge but will need to register their vehicle with the College to receive a parking permit. Cars which do not display a permit cannot park on site. There is a car park on campus available for residential students to use. You can apply for a permit here.

    Everyone with a vehicle on site is required to comply with the car parking and safe driving regulations. Any student found to be breaching these regulations will be informed that they can no longer bring their car on campus.

  • Do I need a TV licence?

    Remember, if you bring a TV you will need a TV Licence which you can apply for once your hall name and number has been confirmed to you at the start of the year.

  • Can I smoke?

    There is a strict no smoking or vaping policy at College buildings. Students must not smoke or vape in College buildings and must use the designated smoking areas within the College grounds.

  • What about my washing?

    There are two launderettes on campus with self-service commercial washing machines and dryers for use by the students.

  • What living essentials should In bring?

    Pillows, duvets, bed linen, towels, crockery, cutlery and pans are not provided in student accommodation. The student needs to bring these items with them and provide their own bedding which must meet fire retardant standards (most modern duvets and pillows will meet these standards, please check the care label for this information).
