This study programme is designed to provide the opportunity for students to gain detailed academic knowledge and a comprehensive understanding of equitation, equine science, equine events and business in relation to horse management. The course provides students with a valid route into Higher Education or a direct route into practical/operational employment within the equine industry.
4 GCSEs
at grade 4 (old GCSE grade C) or above, to include 2 from English, Maths or Science with at least a grade 3 (old GCSE grade D) in the remaining subject. Alternatively a suitable Level 2 vocational qualification (Merit or above) with English, Maths and Science at Level 2.

Generic areas of study:
Equine Sport Pathway
This pathway allows students to develop their riding and training ability both in the saddle and from the ground. This route is very practical and physically demanding as students will have multiple practical sessions per week including riding lessons.
Students will also study:
Exercising horses in addition to the generic modules shown above.
Your work is assessed continually throughout the programme, this could be through practical work and riding as well as written assignments. You will also complete an end of year synoptic assessment and undertake examinations at set points in the academic year.

Higher education qualifications such as Foundation Degrees in Equine Event Management or Equine Sports Management and, if you’re successful, then on to a top up BSc Hons Degree.

Progression and Development Sessions
All students enrolled on a Level 2 or Level 3 course will be required to attend Progression and Development sessions every week. These sessions will cover a wide range of topics from careers and employability, British Values and equality and diversity to essential life skills such as mental health and wellbeing, drugs and alcohol and personal safety.
Students will gain work-related experience on the College Equestrian Yard and undertake yard duties on a rota based system as part of the study programme. Students will be expected to work on set mornings/evenings dependent on their timetable plus weekend yard duties. For example, you may work Friday evening through to the following Friday morning to include the weekend, once every three weeks. This aspect of work experience includes early morning and afternoon duties, 7.15am – 8.30am and 4.30pm – 5.30pm and weekend duties (Saturday and Sunday 8am – 4.30pm). prior to students commencing work experience.
Students will also be expected to gain meaningful external work experience as part of the study programme. Students are to complete a minimum of 150 hours in their first year and 315 hours in their second year of study. (Some students may opt to complete the 315 hours in their first year, this will be discussed during induction)
So that you are as prepared as you can be for your course, here are a few reminders about PPE (personal protective equipment) you will need:
Riding hat- to current BHS (2018) and BETA guide safety standards
Hairnet
Gloves – dark coloured, to be be worn whilst leading and riding
Long riding/Jodhpur boots – must be clean, chaps must be black or brown colour
Tops- Askham Bryan College tops where possible, alternatively, dark coloured sweatshirts, polo shirt and coats. No hooded tops.
Body protector – to current BHS (2018) and BETA guide safety standards
A normal range of stationery and USB stick are required for theory sessions.

The teaching facilities are set in the heart of Stewart Park in Middlesbrough, however students on equine courses will access local stables in and around Middlesbrough in partnership with Askham Bryan College
