This qualification is intended to provide the practical skills and underpinning knowledge that is relevant to the role of veterinary care support. Demands on the veterinary sector has increased in recent years, with pet ownership rising. This has led to an increased need for qualified veterinary care support staff, who form an essential part of the veterinary team.

Throughout the qualification, learners will gain the knowledge and skills required to maintain the veterinary environment, support their colleagues effectively, and provide care for patients within a veterinary setting. Learners will successfully adapt to the individual needs of the animals in their care and will cover all aspects of animal husbandry relevant to the role of providing veterinary care support. Individuals will be expected to be responsible for meeting the welfare needs of the animals in their care, whilst working professionally and ethically within their legal limitations and scope of practice.

Key Information

This one-year Level 2 course combines a Level 2 Certificate in Veterinary Care Support with work-based learning via a placement in an animal setting.

The combined programme enables students to develop underpinning knowledge of the physiological workings of the animal in addition to basic nursing care, treatment and the prevention of disease.

A small e-portfolio of work-related skills forms part of the assessment of this course, along with task-based assignments and practical assessments.

Students must also undertake a work placement up to 600hrs within an animal setting, a portion of which much be a veterinary practice.

Note: For future study, should students wish to be considered for the Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing, work experience must be undertaken in a veterinary practice.

The course allows students to experience both Veterinary Nursing and Animal Management aspects. From this, they can then make an informed decision on their preferred continued study. Alongside this course you can restudy GCSE English and GCSE Maths at the college to help with your progression opportunities onto other courses in the future.

Students are required to have undertaken two weeks voluntary work in any animal-related setting. This will be supported with a satisfactory reference from this provider.

All students enrolled on a Level 2 course will be required to attend Progression and Development sessions every week. These sessions will cover a wide range of topics from careers and employability, British Values and equality and diversity to essential life skills such as mental health and wellbeing, drugs and alcohol and personal safety.

Progression

Successful graduates of this course can apply to study the level 3 Diploma Veterinary Nursing course. Other students may wish to progress onto courses in the following curriculum areas; Animal Management, Equine, Agriculture etc.

Progression and Development Sessions

All students enrolled on a Level 2 course will be required to attend Progression and Development sessions every week. These sessions will cover a wide range of topics from careers and employability, British Values and equality and diversity to essential life skills such as mental health and wellbeing, drugs and alcohol and personal safety.

 

Students are to complete up to 600 hours within an animal setting, a portion of which much be a veterinary practice.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where necessary for work placement
