Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs

at grade 4 (old GCSE grade C) or above, to include 2 from English, Maths or Science with at least a grade 3 (old GCSE grade D) in the remaining subject. Alternatively a suitable Level 2 vocational qualification (Merit or above) with English, Maths and Science at Level 2.

Students will also study:

Exercising horses in addition to the generic modules shown above. This allows students to develop their riding and training ability both in the saddle and from the ground. This can be physically demanding as students will be required to complete practical tasks and ride.
Your work is assessed continually throughout the programme, this could be through practical work and riding as well as written assignments. You will also complete an end of year synoptic assessment and undertake examinations at set points in the academic year.

Alternatively a suitable Level 2 vocational qualification (Merit or above) with English, Maths and Science at Level 2.

Please note: for rider safety and welfare reasons, the College has a maximum weight limit for riders of 13 ยฝ stone

Higher education qualifications such as Foundation Degrees in Equine Event Management or Equine Sports Management and, if you’re successful, then on to a top up BSc Hons Degree.

Progression into employment either directly from completion of your course or following a successful apprenticeship.

Progression and Development Sessions

All students enrolled on a Level 2 or Level 3 course will be required to attend Progression and Development sessions every week. These sessions will cover a wide range of topics from careers and employability, British Values and equality and diversity to essential life skills such as mental health and wellbeing, drugs and alcohol and personal safety.

Students are to undertake an industry placement that will span 315-420 hours with a minimum of 45-60 days.

 

 

Students are encouraged to find their own work experience in a role that they are interested in. The work experience co-ordinators are on hand to help you with finding a work placement.

 

So that you are as prepared as you can be for your course, here are a few reminders about PPE (personal protective equipment) you will need:

 

Riding hat- to current BHS (2018) and BETA guide safety standards

Hairnet

Gloves – dark coloured, to be be worn whilst leading and riding

Long riding/Jodhpur boots – must be clean, chaps must be black or brown colour

Tops- Askham Bryan College tops where possible, alternatively, dark coloured sweatshirts, polo shirt and coats. No hooded tops.

Body protector – to current BHS (2018) and BETA guide safety standards

A normal range of stationery and USB stick are required for theory sessions.

    York is the College's residential campus and is located just four miles from York city centre. At York we offer a full range of subject areas and levels including Apprenticeships, Level 1-3 Diplomas, Foundation, Top Up and BSc Honours Degrees.
