T-Level: Tree and Woodland Management students collaborate with local felling site
2nd April 2025
Students from Askham Bryan College’s T-Level: Tree and Woodland Management course have joined forces with local business SMR Agrifor to assist with felling trees at one of their sites, all while supporting habitat conservation.
The collaboration began when Mike Rickards, co-founder of SMR Agrifor, reached out to the college with a proposal to work together. Head of Horticulture Steve Bassford was immediately drawn to the opportunity, appreciating the alignment between SMR Agrifor’s values and the college’s goals. What began as a straightforward inquiry has grown into a thriving partnership that benefits both the students and the wider local community.
“Sustainability is high on the agenda, especially with our new T-level courses. Mike and Sue’s approach with SMR Agrifor aligns perfectly, it’s about helping communities, thinking of the future and doing things in a way that’s sustainable and meaningful.” said Steve Bassford, Head of Horticulture, Askham Bryan College.
At the heart of the partnership is SMR Agrifor’s commitment to sustainable forestry. Their partnership with Askham Bryan provides students with invaluable hands-on experience in conservation and responsible forestry practices.
“The partnership with SMR Agrifor aligns perfectly with our values,” says Steve Bassford, Head of Horticulture at Askham Bryan College. “It’s not just about equipping students with skills; it’s about instilling a deep understanding of sustainability and their role in protecting our planet.”
Students participate in real-world forestry activities, from tree planting and habitat management to aerial rescues and environmentally conscious tree felling. These immersive experiences connect theoretical knowledge with tangible outcomes, fostering a profound sense of responsibility for the environment.
“This collaboration allows us to give back to our community while teaching students the critical importance of sustainable practices,” adds Mike Rickards, Co-Founder of SMR Agrifor. “Together, we’re building a future where sustainability is at the heart of forestry and land management.”
With the introduction of T-level qualifications, Askham Bryan College is at the forefront of a new era in education. The government designed programs focus on blending academic study with hands-on training and emphasising essential skills like sustainability. These qualifications prepare students for industry demands and opens doors for students, equipping them to pursue careers in the trade.
