University Centre Askham Bryan’s Class of 2024 celebrate at Landmark Graduation Ceremony

University Centre Askham Bryan’s Class of 2024 have celebrated their achievements at an annual graduation held in the heart of York.

The total number of higher education students who have graduated this year is 195 . Graduates were joined by their families and friends at a high profile ceremony held at York Minster.

University Centre Askham Bryan (UCAB), based at Askham Bryan College in York, offers higher education qualifications including foundation, honours and master’s degrees.

Tim Whitaker, Chief Executive Officer and Principal, Askham Bryan College said: “It was an honour to see our students graduate in such an iconic setting. The event has been extra special as it marks the first cohort to graduate since we achieved foundation degree-awarding powers, and the first time that the Askham Bryan colours have been featured on the graduation robes.

“We are extremely proud of them and wish all of our graduates every success with their next steps and careers.”

Civic leaders, industry experts and employer partners as well as academic staff and college governors took part in the event held earlier this week on 25th September 2024

The York Ceremonial Guard led the procession of guests from the Merchant Taylors’ Hall through the streets to York Minster.

This year’s guest speaker was Jo Judge, Chief Executive Officer, The British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA)

UCAB graduates have successfully completed a wide range of degree level courses including agriculture, animal management, applied animal behaviour and welfare, canine and feline training and behaviour, equine science and management, management of animal collections with conservation, veterinary nursing and zoo management and conservation.

Tilly Hudson who was nominated to receive the Student Vote of Thanks for her contribution throughout the course said: “I am honoured to have been chosen to give the Student Body Vote of Thanks speech at the University Centre Askham Bryan graduation day. I am extremely excited to be celebrating this special event in the beautiful setting of York Minister. This opportunity is the perfect end to my 3 years studying for my degree in Animal Management and Science.”

The College is the only land-based college in the UK with foundation degree awarding powers.  This allows UCAB to create and tailor programmes and autonomously award its own named degrees up to and including Level 5. The purple, gold and green colours were worn by the first cohort of students to graduate from the foundation degrees since Askham Bryan College achieved foundation degree awarding powers. The new robes were showcased alongside graduates sporting the colours of both Harper Adams University and the Royal Agricultural University who award the BSc (Hons) degrees and Veterinary Nursing Foundation Degrees.

Compared to university settings, college-based higher education students benefit from smaller class sizes, personalised support and specialist industry standard facilities.
